Colin launched the Old Mutual open-ended collective investment scheme known as the Old Mutual SA Quoted Property Unit Trust in 2004. He grew the fund to over ZAR2 billion, and won the Standard & Poor’s Top Property Unit Trust award in 2005, its first full year of operation.
Colin led the formation of the open-ended Triangle Real Estate Fund, which achieved top quartile performance during its first full year of operation in 2008. He led his team of fund managers in raising some ZAR2.5 billion in external capital for the fund. This fund owned large super-regional retail assets such as Gateway, Menlyn, Cavendish Square and Vincent Park, worth circa ZAR20 billion.
Colin launched the Old Mutual Mauritian listed Triangle Indian Real Estate Fund together with Old Mutual property investment managers’ Indian partners, ICS Realty. He was a director of the fund and raised circa ZAR1 billion in equity to finance this fund. He traveled locally and internationally to raise the equity, visiting the following countries: India, Switzerland, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Kuwait, London, Mauritius and South Africa.
Colin was investment head of Old Mutual’s property investment asset management business, OMIGPI. The funds he managed included Old Mutual’s full range of listed and unlisted property funds of circa ZAR30 billion in 2008/9. More specifically the funds included the Old Mutual Triangle Core, Development and Indian Funds, as well as the Johannesburg Stock Exchange listed SA Corporate Fund, and the Namibian listed Oryx Property Fund.
Colin has presented on numerous occasions at international and local conferences such as MIPIM, SACSC and SAPOA. He has also hosted the annual IPD Conference as guest sponsor on behalf of Old Mutual’s South African property investment asset manager (OMIGPI). He is a recognized commentator on the South African Property industry.
Colin raised circa ZAR2 billion whilst managing the Old Mutual SA Quoted Property unit trust. Ross was instrumental in the launch of Old Mutual’s South African external unlisted Triangle Property Funds, having served on the project team that spent two years developing them. Ross and Colin were responsible for raising circa ZAR3 billion of external equity for the Old Mutual Triangle Funds. Clients included many of the large major pension and retirement funds in South Africa. Colin raised circa ZAR1 billion equity for the Triangle Indian Fund. This fund’s mandate was to develop four large shopping centres along with development partners, Liberty International plc.
As an investment manager and a financial officer throughout his career, Colin has gained invaluable experience in structuring many financial transactions.
Colin was involved in the JSE listing of Woolworths in 1996, and was instrumental in their acquisition of Country Road, an Australian listed private label retailer.
Colin assisted the liquidators in the sale of the Health and Racquet Club to Virgin Active for a handsome sum. Virgin Active (SA) is a thriving business, worth in excess of ZAR2 billion.
Colin led the successful business acquisition of Marriott Properties by Old Mutual South Africa’s property investment asset manager (OMIGPI), together with Old Mutual’s Managing Director. This transaction doubled the size of the OMIGPI business, and generated an IRR of over 50%. It was also the first time in 20 years that Old Mutual (SA) had made an acquisition of another company.

Colin led various property acquisitions for the funds in his responsibility including the Menlyn Land and Knysna Shopping Mall acquisitions in South Africa.
Colin led the sales of a 50% share of 56,000 m/2 Bayside Shopping Centre, and 50% of 135,000 m/2 Menlyn and Cavendish as well as numerous other properties.
